Every conversion on this site assumes the vial holds what its label claims, in the state the manufacturer intended, and that assumption is a physical question about a freeze-dried solid rather than an arithmetic one. Short answer

What this section is: two pages on the physical product, the freeze-dried solid sitting in the vial, before any conversion or comparison is on the table.

What lyophilized means: frozen, then dried under vacuum, so the ice turns straight into vapour without passing through a liquid phase. What remains is a dry porous solid called the cake.

Why products are made this way: because they are unstable in solution. Removing the water slows the reactions that would otherwise consume the molecule, which is what a shelf life is built on.

What a cake's appearance means: less than most posts assume. Formulation scientists have published that a non-ideal appearance is sometimes inherent to the product, while meltback, a form of collapse from incomplete sublimation, is the one that carries a real change.

Why does handling come before the math?

Because every conversion on this site rests on one assumption: that the vial contains the mass its label claims, in the form the process was designed to produce.

When the assumption breaks, the arithmetic does not warn anyone: a converter divides whatever mass is typed into it by whatever water volume follows. It has no way to know that the material in front of you is not what the label describes.

So the order is deliberate: what the product is comes first, what it converts to comes second. The conversions themselves live in the tools section and assume an intact vial throughout.

What actually sets a shelf life?

The process and what it leaves behind, primarily the residual moisture after drying, not a number that circulates without a document behind it.

Three stages, each depending on the last: freezing, primary drying by sublimation, and secondary drying by desorption. They are separate processes, and the outcome of each constrains the next.

What that means for a stated figure: a shelf life belongs to a specific formulation stored in specific conditions, which is why these pages point at the formulation literature rather than at a consensus figure with no origin.

What do these pages not answer?

Whether a particular vial is good. Nobody can settle that from a description or a photograph, and neither page pretends otherwise.

What they do instead: name what the freeze-drying literature says each appearance is, and separate the cosmetic outcomes from meltback, which the regulator describes as a form of cake collapse from incomplete sublimation.
